Read on to learn about how ShipAir Express has grown their business for over a decade into one that reaches different continents and countries.
1. Can you please share a bit of background information about your business?
ShipAir Express ZA started just over a decade ago with the simple idea that customers in the logistics space weren’t receiving the level of care they deserved. From the beginning our goal has been to build a business that fills that gap by offering a more niche and personalised client-focused approach.
We are not just a freight forwarder but act more as an extension of our clients’ businesses. By working closely with them, we develop a deep understanding of their culture, operations, ambitions, and long-term goals. Having this approach has helped us to help our clients to remain efficient, supported and highly competitive.
2. Which countries do you export to or import from?
Our global network extends across most major markets, with regular import and export movements to and from China, Australasia, Africa, North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
3. When did you realise your business was ready for exporting/importing? What were the key indicators?
When I understood the needs of the industry and what clients were truly seeking. It became clear that our role was to explore all avenues and solutions to address those gaps. My motivation was further strengthened by our first client, who not only acknowledged our potential but also referred us to others. Today, the majority of our business continues to come through client referrals.
4. Can you share some tips for finding and researching international markets for export, or international suppliers for import? Where did you find your best leads?
It’s important to focus on emerging markets, where real growth opportunities often lie. Established markets, while stable, tend to offer limited potential for expansion.
5. What was your biggest initial fear or concern about exporting/importing, and how did you address it?
Global tensions and their unpredictability can be unsettling, yet they also create windows of opportunity. Trade remains the lifeblood of economies, and those who navigate these times can benefit significantly.
6. Did you encounter any unexpected obstacles, and how did you adapt?
Logistics, by nature, tends to be influenced by global events. Every obstacle is an opportunity to adapt and learn.
7. Did you attend trade shows or participate in international business development programs? If so, can you mention any that were helpful?
We intend to attending some in the near future.
8. What advice do you have for aspiring exporters or importers in South Africa?
However bleak it may seem at times, there will always be opportunities. Success becomes a certainty if you can have a positive mindset, coupled with hard work, honesty and determination.
What really made the difference was taking the time to truly understand the client. Instead of going with a one-size-fits-all approach, the focus was on what they specifically needed—and building a solution around that.
It’s a good reminder that being client-centric isn’t just phrase . When you listen properly, stay flexible, Keep Your Word- tailor what you offer, you build stronger relationships—and that’s what drives real, lasting growth.
