Frequently Asked Questions About CAEPA Certificates of Origin

What is a CAEPA Certificate of Origin?
A CAEPA Certificate of Origin is an official document that confirms goods being exported from South Africa are fully or partially produced in the country. It is required to benefit from the China-Africa Economic Partnership Agreement (CAEPA).

Who needs a CAEPA Certificate of Origin?
Any South African exporter shipping goods to China may require this certificate. It is especially important for regulated goods or products that qualify for reduced import duty under these trade agreements.

How do I obtain a CAEPA Certificate of Origin?
To obtain the certificate, you must:

  • Have a valid South African import/export license
  • Submit the required documents for verification by our consultants

How long does it take to receive the certificate?
Certificates are typically processed and couriered within 2–4 working days, subject to customs processing times.

Can a foreign company apply for a CAEPA Certificate of Origin?
Yes. Foreign entities with the proper import/export registration or through a South African partner can obtain a certificate for goods exported from South Africa.

Why is the CAEPA Certificate of Origin important for exporters?
This certificate ensures compliance with trade agreement rules, helps reduce import duties for buyers in the destination country, and demonstrates that the goods meet the necessary origin requirements.

Do all South-African products qualify for duty-free treatment?
Thousands of South African products qualify for zero-tariff treatment; however, exporters should consult the tariff schedule.
There are tariff rate quotes for some products, meaning that up to a certain volume there are zero tariffs, and then high duties are incurred after the quota is reached. These products include: Wheat, Maize, Rice, Sugar, Cotton, Wool and some wool products

Can I claim benefits for shipments already exported?
Yes. Retrospective Certificates of Origin may be issued for qualifying shipments exported on or after 1 May 2026.
