What is a trade agreement?
Trade agreements are agreements between two or more nations on how they will work together to ensure mutual trade benefits. These agreements determine the tariffs, or taxes and duties, that countries impose on imports. Generally, when countries have a trade agreement in place goods move more easily between those countries, and less duty taxes are imposed on the goods.
How will using a trade agreement benefit me?
Trade agreements generally lessen or remove the import duty associated with an item. For importers this means that your total landed cost will be less. For exporters, this lessens the total price the importer or buyer will pay, making your product more attractive compared to competitors from countries without that benefit.
What do I need to use a trade agreement?
For exporters: to make use of a trade agreement you need to:
- Be registered with South African Customs as an exporter
- Be registered with South African Customs as a user for the trade agreements that you are interested in.
- Include an original copy of the certificate of origin specified by the trade agreement with each export. Goods must originate from South African in order to get an certificate of origin.

Do all products benefit from trade agreements?
